New Priest Assigned to Wilmington TLM

Father Mark Betti of Immaculate Conception Parish, Clinton, (pictured 3d from right) has been assigned to serve as the celebrant of the Traditional Latin Mass at the Shrine of St. Mary here in Wilmington.

Father Parkerson remains as the Official Delegate for the Latin Mass in the diocese, and besides his home parish of Sacred Heart in Dunn, he will also be celebrating the TLM in the Cathedral in Raleigh.

So far, the time and schedule remains unchanged, the last Sunday of each month at 7:00 PM.

If there are any changes, I will post them here ASAP.

Mass for 26 December Cancelled

Due to the snow, the 7 PM Mass has been cancelled at the Shrine of St. Mary's, Wilmington, NC for 26 Dec, 2010.

So it goes!

In the meantime, we're still in a holding pattern for the new schedule for the Latin Mass up in Camp Lejeune, and we are also still scheduled for Mass on the last Sunday of the month next January.

Update on the TLM in Camp Lejeune

Despite rumors to the contrary, the Latin Mass has NOT been cancelled on Lejeune.

I just spoke w/ Fr. Bautista, and the Latin Mass has been suspended during the month of December, and is expected to resume in January.

Not that long ago, there were 14 Catholic Chaplains aboard Lejeune... it's now down to 2.

Please pray for all of our priests, for vocations and more priests volunteer for duty with the Archdiocese of the Military Services.

Like Archbishop Broglio said not all that long ago, Catholic boys in uniform will start going to Protestant Chaplains if there are no Catholic Chaplains available. And no one wants our boys exposed to heresy.

Change at Camp Lejeune

With Fr. Logan now retired, this leaves only Fr. Bautistarojas celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass up in Lejeune.

Fr. Bautistarojas has informed me that they've lost another Catholic Chaplain, so they're spread mighty thin. And by Canon Law, a priest can oly celebrate so many Masses in a day.

Father has also told me in early November that "Next month [December] we will have it on the 5th and 19th", but I did e-mail Padre to double-check that we would be having Mass on those two dates.

When I get solid scoop, I'll pass the word.

Poll: almost half of Mass-goers would attend older form

An extraordinary article from the Catholic Herald (UK). The paragraph at the very end of the article is astounding in its obviousness; Almost half of English and Welsh Mass-goers would attend Masses in the traditional form of the Roman Rite if it was celebrated in local parishes, a new study has shown.

The survey, which used a sample of 800 people who identified themselves as Catholic, showed that 66 per cent of practising Catholics would be happy to attend the traditional Latin Mass once a month if it were celebrated in their parishes.

Commissioned by the French group Paix Liturgique, the survey also showed that Britain had a higher percentage of regular Mass attendance than France, Portugal and Germany.

Although only 19 per cent of Britain's population identifies as Catholic, 32 per cent of Catholics attend Mass at least once a month, if not more often, compared with 19 per cent of French Catholics and 10 per cent of German Catholics.Read more...

Change in times for the Latin Mass at Camp Lejeune

As of September 12, the time for the TLM at Lejeune will change from 9:30 to 12:30. This is due to Catechism Classes being back in session, and Father needs to be available to give lessons and Q&A sessions with the kids.

In the meantime, please know that Father Logan will be retiring from the Navy at the end of next month (more details as they become available).

Lastly, please keep Father Bautistarojas in your prayers. He leaves tomorrow for "Latin Mass Bootcamp" in Chicago. His first ever public TLM will be at Lejeune next Sunday, 0930.

Good News and Bad News

The bad news first - Father Logan, 2d Marine Division Chaplain and the only TLM celebrant up in Camp Lejeune will be retiring this Fall. But nonetheless, Fair Winds and Following Seas to the Commander.

Personally speaking, Father Logan's decision to start celebrating the TLM was a Godsend. I'll always be grateful to him for that.

But it looks like good Padre is on his way to Germany to serve returning troops headed back to The States.

Now the good news - below is the application for a 6 month vehicle pass for the Base. This will let you come aboard the Base at any gate without having to go to the Visitors Center at the Main Gate.

Just print out the form, and make sure you address the envelope to the following address;

Catholic chaplains “can never condone -- even silently -- homosexual behavior”

Archbishop for the Military Services offers guidance to priests serving U.S. armed forces, urges Congress not to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy

June 1, 2010

In a response to a request from the Chiefs of Chaplains of the Armed Forces I communicated some considerations and concerns regarding the proposal to change the existing legislation regarding persons with a homosexual orientation in the military. In fulfilling my role as the chief shepherd of Catholics in the United States Armed Forces, I have had the opportunity of visiting many installations in the recent past. A number of chaplains and commanding officers have expressed concerns about the effects of a change. There is a request for guidance.

The teaching of the Catholic Church is clearly expressed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered." They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.

2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.

Consequently, those with a homosexual orientation can expect respect and treatment worthy of their human dignity. The prohibitions regarding sexual harassment and intimidation refer just as much to homosexuals as to anyone else. However, unions between individuals of the same gender resembling marriage will not be accepted or blessed by Catholic chaplains. Furthermore no restrictions or limitations on the teaching of Catholic morality can be accepted. First Amendment rights regarding the free exercise of religion must be respected.

This means that Catholic chaplains must show compassion for persons with a homosexual orientation, but can never condone -- even silently -- homosexual behavior. A change might have a negative effect on the role of the chaplain not only in the pulpit, but also in the classroom, in the barracks, and in the office.

A more fundamental question, however, should be raised. What exactly is the meaning of a change? No one can deny that persons with a homosexual orientation are already in the military. Does the proposed change authorize these individuals to engage in activities considered immoral not only by the Catholic Church, but also by many other religious groups? Will there be changes in the living conditions, especially in the AOR?

There is no doubt that morality and the corresponding good moral decisions have an effect on unit cohesion and the overall morale of the troops and effectiveness of the mission. This Archdiocese exists to serve those who serve and it assists them by advocating moral behavior. The military must find ways to promote that behavior and develop strong prohibitions against any immoral activity that would jeopardize morale, good morals, unit cohesion and every other factor that weakens the mission. So also must a firm effort be made to avoid any injustices that may inadvertently develop because individuals or groups are put in living situations that are an affront to good common sense.

I think that those questions require an adequate response. The effect of a repeal of the current legislation has the potential of being enormous and overwhelming. Nothing should be changed until there is certainty that morale will not suffer. Sacrificing the moral beliefs of individuals or their living conditions to respond to merely political considerations is neither just nor prudent especially for the armed forces at a time of war. Catholics believe that nothing will be done if there is a careful and prudent evaluation of the effects of a change.

For years, those struggling with alcoholism have benefitted from Alcoholics Anonymous. Like homosexuality, there is rarely a cure. There is a control through a process, which is guarded by absolute secrecy. It is an equivalent to “Don’t ask don’t tell.” The process has worked well for some time without the charge that it is discriminatory.

The Archdiocese for the Military Services -- the only jurisdiction charged with the pastoral care of all Catholics in the military, VA Administration, and at the service of the Federal Government outside of the boundaries of the United States, which is also charged with endorsing Roman Catholic priests urges the Congress not to repeal the current policy for the Armed Forces.

An Especially Poignant Mass

I've made no secret how I feel about 98% of the world being sheep, 1% being wolves, and 1% being sheepdogs... or in the case today, either sheepdogs or shepherds.

Today at Mass in Camp Lejeune, Father welcomed home a young Marine who literally got off the plane this morning from a combat tour in Afghanistan.

Today's reading from The Holy Gospel of St. John, from the Douay-Rheims Bible - John 10: 11-16. Keep these two images in your mind as you read today's Gospel.

We’re looking for a few good men… and women. We’re in need of volunteers in the following areas –

3. Ladies Altar Guild. Ensure that altar linens, flowers, etc., are properly placed
on the altar.
4. Choir. Experience with sacred music is a plus, but not a necessity.

A Brief History of the Traditional Latin Mass
“The Extraordinary Form”, “The Tridentine”,
“The Traditional Latin Mass”…
different names, different Masses?

Despite pronouncements from certain unlearned individuals, the language of the liturgy in the Early Church wasn’t English and Spanish. As Liturgical Latin started to die out as a “living language”, Pope St. Gregory the Great instituted ‘The Gregorian Mass’ in the late 6th century.Thus ensuring that what was said was meant, and what was meant was said.

During the pontificate of Pope St. Pius V, it was evident that the Mass was beginning to have variances from nation to nation, province to province, village to village. A veritable Tower of Babel was rearing its ugly head in the Western Church. It was common for Catholics to not understand the language being spoken in parishes other than their own. Rites less than 200 years old were effectively suppressed and the Council of Trent standardized the Latin Mass (Tridentine) for the Western Church.

The overwhelming majority of Latin Rite Catholics may not have been Latin scholars, but for centuries, Catholics understood enough Latin to understand exactly what was happening during the Mass. In some ways, our current situation resembles that at the time of the Council of Trent.

Local dioceses—even local parishes—have added Eucharistic Prayers and modified the text of the Mass, practices forbidden by the Church. The celebration of the Mass in the local language and the increased migration of populations has meant that even a single parish may have several Masses on a Sunday that are celebrated in different languages. Some critics argue that these changes have undercut the universality of the Mass, which was evident in the strict adherence to rubrics and the use of Latin in the Tridentine Latin Mass.

"Do's" and "Don'ts" of Church Conduct
For the glory and honor of God and for the benefit of yourself and of all parishioners, please make note of the following Church Conduct Do’s and Don’ts:

· Recognize and appreciate that Mass is the re-presentation of Calvary. Mass is not a party. Socializing should be conducted outside the church building.

· Remember the maxim: "Silence is Golden in the House of the Lord". Note that this includes the time before and after Mass as well as all other times outside of Mass (most especially during Eucharistic Adoration and Confession).

· Attend each Mass as if it was your first - and last.

· Arrive early and prepare properly for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

· Focus on the priest (who is in the place of Christ) during Mass, not on your neighbor. No time is more advantageous to you for gaining graces. Acquire and use an appropriate missal during Mass.

· Wear appropriate clothing to church. Clothing should be modest and should not be tight-fighting or clingy. Bathing suits, shorts, halter tops, and t-shirts are unsuitable attire, as are sleeveless dresses, low cut tops, skirts above the knees, tops exposing the stomach or back, clothes with advertising or logos, see-thru clothing, suggestive clothing, etc.

· Women of all ages are to wear a head covering as directed by St. Paul in the Holy Bible (see 1 Cor. 11:4-16).

· Turn off phones, pagers, alarms, etc. before entering the church.

· Genuflect towards the Tabernacle and make a sign of the Cross before entering the pew and when passing the Tabernacle. Remember that the Holy Eucharist contains the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ. Nothing on earth is more holy. If you do not treat It reverently, what on earth is sacred?

· Adopt an attitude of piety, humility, and reverence while in church.

· Receive Holy Communion in a kneeling position.

Vatican confirms freedom of priests to celebrate Extraordinary Form whenever they like – no need for 'stable group'

Good news from Rome: the Vatican has further underlined the freedom of priests to celebrate Mass in the Extraordinary Form whenever they choose. Two important points have been clarified by Ecclesia Dei, which will make it more difficult for the English, Welsh and above all Scottish bishops to stall the implementation of Summorum Pontificum:

1. A priest does NOT have to be approached by a “stable group” of the faithful in order to schedule a PUBLIC celebration of the Extraordinary Form – he may choose to do so, for example, in order to introduce his parishioners to this ancient form of the Roman Rite. Or because it’s his aunt’s birthday. Any reason, really.

2. A Mass in the Extraordinary Form may replace a regularly scheduled Mass in the Ordinary Form.

You can find more details of the Ecclesia Dei ruling here, on the excellent New Liturgical Movement blog. I do hope that priests will be encouraged by this document to exercise their full rights under Summorum Pontificum. I know of several instances in which British bishops are trying to undermine the Pope’s wishes, though I’m not going to go public where it would make the situation worse. But it is common knowledge that the situation is particularly serious is Scotland, where EF Masses are extremely rare and official claims that there is no demand for them need to be scrutinised very carefully, shall we say. More on that later.

Meanwhile, traditionalist priests and seminarians should take heart. Your hour is coming.

The Shame Of The Marines
Not starring John Garfield

First off, let it be known this posting is my personal opinion, and that of no one else.

On with the show.

I'm disappointed -- VERY DISAPPOINTED -- with my fellow Marines up in Camp Lejeune. We Marines have always prided ourselves with our stickler adherence (bordering on the psychotic and OCD) to the history, customs and traditions of The Corps.

Ask any Marine, you'll hear about Tun Tavern. Want to know who Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller is? Ask a Marine. 'Blood Stripe', what the hell's a Blood Stripe? Ask a Marine. 18 or 80, show a picture of the flag raising on Mount Suribachi to a Marine, the chest swells more than a wee bit. The Marine Corps Birthday Ball... "March on the Beef", first and second slice of cake to the oldest and youngest Marine present. Hell, you can be stationed in the friggin' desert, but the floor is 'the deck', a mop is 'a swab', and that 26-year old Captain is 'the Old Man'.

Yep, Marines are figuratively eat-up with our history, customs and traditions.

To a very large degree, it's our bulldog adherence to our traditions that separate and differentiate us from those in our Sister Services. The exception, it would seem, would be Catholic Marines and the Traditional Latin Mass.

Since the re-introduction of the TLM at Camp Lejeune, the numbers have winnowed from a decent number, to a mere handful. The congregation is roughly broken into equal thirds -- active duty, retired military, and local civilians. The number of active duty personnel should be through the roof. But in all fairness, during the first few Masses, there were more than a few 'lookie-loos'. To include a father and son across the aisle from me who snickered and made smart-ass comments throughout the entire Mass. Only through the divine aid of St Francis Xavier was I kept from making these two numbskulls the first martyrs for Bugnini.

And for this truly historic Mass that has recently been celebrated with regularity aboard Camp Lejeune, the highest ranking Catholic I've seen present is a retired(?) Navy Commander. In my personal opinion, that is absolutely and utterly shameful on the part of both the senior Officer and Enlisted leadership who call themselves Catholic.

Anyhow, if any of my fellow Marines up Camp Lejeune way should be reading this, I ask of you to consider the following;

1. This Mass goes back 1,500 years. You can't get much more traditional than that.

2. This is the Mass whose roots, the words of Consecration itself, goes all the way back to the exact words used by Sts. Peter and Paul when they preached in pagan Rome.

3. This is the Mass that inspired Catholic Warriors to defend Christendom at the Battle of Lepanto, the Battle of Vienna, during the Holy Crusades, etc.

4. This is the Mass that strengthened centuries upon centuries of martyrs as they were led away to be beheaded, burned or have their guts slit open and their insides ripped out... all for the high crime of being Catholic.

5. This is the Mass that was celebrated at Belleau Wood, Iwo Jima, the Chosin, Hue.

6. This is the Mass of Servant of God Father Vincent Capodanno (CMoH), Father Joseph O'Callahan (CMoH) and Father Aloysius Schmitt (who the chapel was initial dedicated to).

7. This is a masculine Catholicism. Do the right thing, you'll be rewarded. Purposfully do the wrong thing, get ready for your sword to be stomped on in biblical proportions. No holding of hands, or "it's only a sin if you think it's a sin" at the TLM.

8. This is the Mass that is set in stone, unambiguous, in your face in it's moral absolutes... just like the Marine Corps.With all that said, allow me to be so bold as to remind my fellow Marines that yes, I understand that learning Latin seems intimidating. But no one's expecting you to become a Latin scholar... just understand enough to understand the Mass.

Understanding the rubrics of the TLM takes time. But no one expects you to become a professional liturgist... just understand enough to understand the Mass.

Traditional Catholic spirituality and all that it entails can be kind of tough to wrap both mind and soul around, but hey... as Marines, we know that nothing worthwhile comes easy. If anyone understands that painfully simple maxim, one would think it would be Marines.

Yeah, it's tough, but maybe that's why they're called spiritual excersizes.

As you'll see at the bottom edge, the arrow pointing to the Main Gate. For those who DO NOT have a base vehicle sticker on their car, you'll have to stop off at the Visitors Center at the main Gate and get a Visitors Pass. On the block where it asks who your "sponsor" is, just write down "Chaplain Logan".

From the Main Gate itself to the traffic circle (the intersection of Holcomb Blvd and Thomas J. McHugh Blvd), that's approx 5-7 miles.

From the traffic circle, take the first right on to McHugh, and go about a mile and a half. You'll see the Catholic Chapel about one and a half miles from the circle.

Easy to find.

I'll Admit, This Sounds Like I'm Whining And Then Slapping Myself On The Back...
But read all the way through before you make a judgment call

Mrs. Caveman and I are lucky. We now have the opportunity to drive roughly 100 miles round trip to attend the Traditional Latin Mass (Camp Lejeune's St. Francis of Xavier Chapel) every Sunday. And to make things even better, we have a TLM local on the last Sunday of the month. We use to have drive about 225 miles round trip to Sacred Heart parish in Dunn, NC.

Anyhow, on our way home from Mass this past Sunday, the House Sergeant Major commented; "Kev, we shouldn't have to drive all this way. We should have a TLM in our Deanery every Sunday.

And she's right. We should, but we don't.

And I've made no secret of some of the blatantly anti-Catholic statements made from some of the parishes here in the Cape Fear Deanery. Everything from "when we receive Holy Communion, we become Jesus", to "during WWII, the Catholic Church stood by and did nothing to protect the Jews", to "outside of Mass, the Eucharist is no different than what you'd be given at a fast food drive-through".

These are things said from the pulpit by Catholic clerics.

And it would be easy to regularly attend Mass locally. To be just another dead fish going with the flow. Seriously, who enjoys spending 3 hours driving on a Sunday? But as we all know, Christ told us over and over to never take the easy way. I'm sure we all are familiar with the admonitions to take the more difficult path in life.

Along those lines, I've posted about Blessed Ralph Milner in the past. A man who died a martyr's death for the high crime of simply being Catholic. A man who was hung, drawn, and quartered. And for those who aren't exactly sure what entails to be hung, drawn and quartered - it means that he was hung by the neck and slowly strangled, had his belly slit open and his intestines yanked out, then had his arms and legs ripped from their sockets.

All while alive and conscience.

I guess that long drive really isn't all that bad after all.

And for the history buffs out there, here's some of the background on St Francis Xavier Chapel (but more specifically, Father Schmitt) from the official Camp Lejeune website;
Camp Lejeune's Roman Catholic Chapel was first dedicated as St. Aloysius on 6 December 1942 in memory of Father Aloysius Schmitt, the first chaplain and first Catholic Chaplain to die in World War II. It was rededicated as St. Francis Xavier Chapel on 27 January 1943.

Each of the ten stained glass windows was designed by New Jersey artist Katharine Lamb Tait and depicts two life-size images of saints of Catholic tradition. The windows were funded as memorials to their wartime dead by the six World War II Marine Divisions, the 3rd and 5th Amphibious Corps, Fleet Marine Force Pacific, Navy personnel, and personnel of Camp Lejeune.Father Aloysius H. Schmitt. Killed In Action Dec. 7th, 1941. USS Oklahoma - Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Roman Catholic Chaplain Lt. j.g. Aloysius H. Schmitt, born Dec. 4, 1909 in St. Lucas, Iowa, was at the beginning of his naval career. Appointed as acting chaplain on June 28, 1939, he was serving his first tour of duty at sea onboard the USS Oklahoma (BB-37) at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He had just finished celebrating his morning mass when the attack began. As the assault on the Navy’s fleet raged, Chaplain Schmitt went to the ship’s sick bay to minister to the injured and dying.

When the Oklahoma was struck and water poured into her hold, the ship began to list and roll over. Many men were trapped. Schmitt found his way - with other crew members - to a compartment where only a small porthole provided enough space to escape.

Chaplain Schmitt helped other men, one by one, to crawl to safety. When it became his turn, the chaplain tried to get through the small opening. As he struggled to exit through the porthole, he became aware that others had come into the compartment from which he was trying to escape. As he realized that the water was rising rapidly and that escape would soon be impossible, he insisted on being pushed back through the hole so that he could help others who could get through the opening more easily. Accounts from eyewitnesses that have been published in the Arizona Memorial newsletter relate that the men protested, saying that he would never get out alive, but he insisted, “Please let go of me, and may God bless you all.” (From Catholicmil.org)

Change In Mass Times, And New Info For Getting On Camp Lejeune
Straight from the Base website

It was announced that Mass on base is now changed from 12:30 to 9:30.

And after some confusion as to what is required for non-military getting a one-day-pass, here's exactly what I found on the Camp Lejeune website;
Temporary PassesID Card and/or driver's license
vehicle registration
proof of insurance (must meet NC minimum)
Military sponsor (present depending on current threat condition)This past Sunday, it was as simple as the visitor writing down "Chaplain Logan" in the sponsor box. A saw at least 9 different people get on base this way.

Just keep in mind, folks... if the Terrorist Threat Level goes up, it could be a bit tougher getting on base for Mass.

It was great to be back on base. I retired over 12 years ago, and I never make it up to Lejeune all that often. But in a word --- Nice.

And you can tell when you're on a Marine Base when the Chaplain says "we need more young men to step up and learn how to serve the Mass because one of our servers will be leaving in the next few weeks for Afghanistan".

Please ensure you say a prayer for that young man (the taller of the two altar boys) and for all the men in our Armed Forces.

Another Short Round Fired Off
Sorry, guys!

I finally got of my patootie and called the Base MPs at Lejeune. Good news and bad. Civilians CAN get on Base, and as I already passed on to everyone, you must have drivers license, registration and proof of insurance. And here's the kicker... they MUST have someone with a valid military ID Card to sign for them. I can do that for everyone.

I'll be at the Main Gate Visitors Center between 11:45 and 12 noon to sign everyone in. I'll have a little sign on my car saying "MASS" so you can spot me. Just remember, for those unfamiliar with Camp Lejeune, there are a handful of smaller "satellite" bases surrounding Camp Lejeune proper. So if you get lost, just ask for directions to the main Gate itself. Highway 24 (Midway Park). Click here for the Google Map.

The Marines Save The Day!
Again

Great news out of Camp Lejeune. I just received an e-mail from the Chaplains Office in regards to non-military personnel getting aboard Base for this upcoming Sunday's Traditional Latin Mass.

Fr. Bautista has asked that I forward a list of those who will need a one-day-pass for Sunday, he in turn, will notify the Base MPs that those on the list are authorized visitors. With the Terrorism Threat Level being somewhat elevated, there might be trouble with non-military getting aboard base.

So, if anyone is interested in attending Mass on base, just e-mail me your name and address no later than this Wednesday. For those that desire to attend, I'll post directions to both the Main Gate and to St. Francis Catholic Chapel later this week.

If you have 20 minutes to spare, check out last Friday’s Diocese of Raleigh Vocations Holy Hour homily, given by Fr. Paul Parkerson of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dunn, NC. Fr. Parkerson is a throwback (and a fellow deeply Southern, ex-Baptist convert); rarely do you hear one of the words “schism,” “rank heresy,” “apostasy,” “abomination,” and “sins of the flesh” in any given homily, much less all of them. [emphasis mine]

This just in...

A friend just read me the bulletin from the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Chapel up in Camp Lejeune. As of October 4th, the Catholic Chaplaincy will start celebrating the TLM EVERY Sunday!

"TRADITIIONAL LATIN MASS: We will start a Traditional Latin Mass at St. Francis Xavier on Oct 4th at 12:30. While CCD is in session the TLM will be at 1230 and when CCD is over well have it at 0930. This Mass will not replace any Mass that is currently being celebrated."I'm trying to contact the Chaplain's Office to see if it's possible for non-military to get aboard base to attend Mass. But to be completely honest, I couldn't see any reason why civilians couldn't get on base -- just swing by the Visitors Center (right there at the Main Gate), show your drivers license, registration and proof of insurance -- and just let the MPs know you're going to attend Mass at the Catholic Chapel... it shouldn't be a problem.

But when I hear something solid from the God Locker, I'll pass the word.

There have been some rumblings as of late... just rumblings, mind you... that the Military Archdiocese just may be offering The Traditional Latin Mass at one of the handful of Military Bases within proximity of the Wilmington area.

Camp Lejeune/New River MCAS are less than an hour's drive, and Ft Bragg is about the same driving distance as "that parish in Dunn". When something solid happens, I'll be sure and post it.

Yeah, we wanted to let the dust settle before we charged ahead with out latest endeavor --- training new altar boys and starting up a choir.

WE NEED YOU!! We already have two young men who are trained, but might need a refresher course, and one other young man who has shown an interest.

Now we need voices! And if we don't get some volunteers for the choir, it'll be my croaking voice that you'll hear warbling though "Holy God We Praise Thy Name". And none of us want that.

Reasons NOT to Attend the Traditional Latin Mass

These were all reasons I've found for not attending the TLM:

1. I don't know Latin.

2. I don't want to stand out because I don't know what I'm doing.

3. I can't follow the Mass.

4. I prefer English.

Can anyone reading relate? I could keep going if you'd like...

...and...does anyone notice a similar subjective personal pronoun that keeps popping up?

Yes, one of the biggest obstacles in attending the Mass in the Extraordinary Form is ones own personal pride (that Deadly Sin with the capital "I" in the middle). It kept me from attending for years, despite my sincere desire to develop a deeper growth in my faith and more intimate relationship with the Eucharist. Let's face it, we are caught up in a society and culture that keeps our gaze inward. Yet, at the same time we instinctively seek a deeper spiritual relationship with our Lord and Savior. We just tend to get in our own way of it.

So, I'd like to throw out my own version of Pascal's Wager out there. If you are anything like me and are seeking that connection at Mass which for whatever reason, seems insufficient or inadequate, give the Latin Mass a try. I mean, what do you have to lose? Sit in the back and just follow along. It will quickly become clear to you that no one will notice that this is new to you. Then it will become even more clear why...

...that the miracle that God is allowing us to witness and assist in, is the total focus of everyone in attendance. It is about the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, not about any one individual. It is greater than any one of us and you just can't but put your focus, perhaps for the first time this unobscured, on the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

Another TLM coming to Southeastern North Carolina?

At our most recent TLM here in Wilmington, I was told that two of the handful of priests in choir were Catholic Chaplains from up Camp Lejeune way. Possibly I'm just grasping at straws, but it sure would be great if they started celebrating the TLM here in our AO, as well.

We'll see, God willing.
